Mike Hobbs

I have been working and teaching in the guitar making and repair business for over 40 years.

I was taught by John Bailey then later with Peter Reading, setting up my own workshop in the late 70s where I was making and repairing for a lot of the bands around at that time.

During this time I was asked to help teach at Merton College Guitar Making and Repairing Course. This resulted in me becoming a part time teacher, at the college, ever since.

I now offer making and repairing courses in my own fully equipped workshops in all types of guitar making and repairing based in West Ewell, Epsom, Surrey.

The course will provide you with lots of opportunities to hone your woodworking skills using familiar woodwork tools and specialist ones such as thickness callipers, purfling markers, bending irons and machinery.

I will take you through the choices of materials, the whole process from start to finish of the instrument of your choice whether it be a steel string, classical or electric guitar to the completion of the instrument. The number of students will be limited and you will be taught individually on a one to one basis to allow you to learn the tools and techniques at your own pace. Technique is fully explained and demonstrated.

Materials can be purchased from me or you will be guided to what and where to buy from various suppliers around the country.
